Ribbon

The inclusion of ribbon in quilting is certainly not new. Featuring special ribbons and silk fabrics was the passion in Victorian Crazy Quilts. The beauty of the ribbons available now both new and vintage continues to provide us with possibilities for embellishing our appliqué designs. The materials used to make the ribbons can add depth, distinction and realism not present when only cotton fabrics are used.

There are many styles of ribbon that are easily incorporated in Ribbon Appliqué and there is a wonderful selection of ribbon available. Look for them everywhere! Fabric stores, florists and stationery stores are all great sources of very interesting ribbons. I am often surprised at where I find some of my most unusual ribbons.

In the Gallery Section of this site there are several pictures of the more traditional Baltimore Album Quilt blocks where the use of cotton and ribbons have been blended. The addition of the ribbon flowers not only adds depth, but it is much quicker to add a stitched flower of ribbon than an appliquéd one!
