Ultra Suede

Ultra Suede is also great for appliqué. The cut edge is finished and needs no special treatment. Very intricate designs or very small pieces are easily done with Ultra Suede. The Pigma pens also work well to embellish ultra suede eyes, beaks and rose buds!

I first saw Ultra Suede used by Marjorie McKuen from Australia. She used Ultra Suede for hands and faces on a picture block. When the rest of the class saw this - beaks, bird feet and rose calyx's were quickly done using ultra suede of all shades and colors. The ultra suede made an end to the tiny pieces that crumble or unravel during applique; in addition the slender leaves of the rose calyx and stem can be easily done and embellished with a pigma pen.

Ultra Suede also is perfect for silhouettes where the fine details of hair and facial features are lost or must be done with embroidery.

I have also cut thin, less than 1/8th of an inch, strips of Ultra suede for vines and tendrils that are couched into position. You can find packages of ultra suede strips at needlepoint stores along with a variety of other fibers that add interest to your applique.
