Adding
Ribbon Appliqué to your Baltimore Quilt
In
the early 90's at a class with Elly Sienkiewicz, Elly introduced
us to French Wire Ribbons. We were very timid at first, and
in the years to come used more and more of the ribbon in our
blocks. The ribbon works wonderfully when mixed in with more
traditional fabrics. I have included 6 blocks from my Baltimore
Album quilt, both simple and complex, to show how Ribbon Appliqué
can be incorporated into very traditional Baltimore Album Blocks.
All of these patterns are in the Baltimore Album Series by Elly
Sienkiewicz with the exception of the Spring Calla & Daffodil
Bouquet.

Allyson's
Heart
On this traditional heart, one ribbon was used for
the rose buds. The dark and light roses are taking advantage
of the ombre ribbon. The silhouette is cut from ultrasuede.

Mrs.
Numson's Bouquet
I wanted to add a more dramatic center flower and
decided my adaptation of the peony would be perfect.
I also added in the fern on the right with violas, and
the lilac on the left. This is all done with silk embroidery
ribbon.

Fruit
Bowl with Pineapple
This block was an exercise in gauging, taking a
piece of fabric one to two inches larger than the desired
size and gathering the fabric to fit the desired space.
The pineapple is gauges as well as the Olallieberries
on the left. The cherries on the left were stenciled
on a piece of muslin and then appliquéd. A small ribbon
was twisted to embellish the base of the fruit bowl.
