Design - *Tips*
Over
the years, I have discovered easier ways to accomplish even
some of the most difficult tasks. I hope you find these tips
as helpful as I have.
Borders
When
you go through the gallery, you will see a variety of borders
from very simple free flowing patterns to complex ones. I
use a simple set of rules:
1. Establish a frame
2. Echo the style of the quilt
3. Accentuate the blocks
Review the rules with each quilt you are creating. In Enjoy
Quilt, the frame is the brown "trellis" the vines
wrap around. The style of the blocks is very loose and unstructured
as is the rose vine and the trellis. The blocks sit on top
of the trellis.

Quilting
The
quilting designs in Rose Vine, Enjoy and Get Real are all
the same in the center and change in the outside four corners.
In the large 9-block diamond, the quilting is a double cross
hatch at the same angle as the blocks. Each quilt line ends
at the appliqué and picks up at the other side. I used 1/4"
masking tape to mark the lines. Where the 1" border surrounds
the 9 blocks, I change themes.
- In
Rose Vine, I wanted a pattern that would look very lace
like and used feathered borders with the Rose Vine and Ribbon
quilted in a simple outline.
- Get
Real was more relaxed. I wanted to give the effect of the
1" border actually holding the crosshatch quilting in place.
In the corners, the crosshatch "relaxes" and is tied in
a knot so the ends do not wonder. This was done with 1/8"
masking tape (used for pin stripping cars). The rest of
the border is simply outlined.
- Enjoy
has a few surprises. I quilted in a set of vines to echo
the border and added leaves to "fill in". I then added a
few quilted bugs for my girls to find.
